words on words

Words are categories, carved by a combination of our individual and collective perceptions. In a way, these categories can also act as filters, eroding the ground truth of our observations. Yet, without words, the society we live in would look entirely different, if it would exist at all. Words are a paradox of limitation and broadening; my choice of them is hindered by my perception and they confine the full bandwidth of a concept, but because they are the foundation of connection and sharing, they allow me — and the universe around me — to morph and expand.

If our use of language is a function of our perceptions, then how we filter our experiences or exchanges with the world around us is always subject to the state of our identities. It is a feedback cycle of action and reaction, wherein each interaction can alter our lenses of the world and therein our identities ever so slightly. We impact and are impacted. And so my identity is always in transit, as is my use of language. One thing that seems to never change though, is a compulsion to seek understanding; using words to share and to connect.

Before I am a writer, I am an explorer — across subject and medium — interrogating the preconceptions that shade my lens, ideally distilling my perception into a reliable vehicle for observation.
